Direct Combustion is “The process by which a boiler transfers the heat of combusting Biomass into steam which can then be used for electricity, mechanical energy or heat”.Whilst there are several different direct combustion boiler types, capacities and technologies essentially most were originally designed to burn coal and have been modified to work with Biomass. Such modifications are necessary in order to ensure the boilers can operate at maximum efficiency and minimum maintenance with the wide variety of fuel feedstocks that may be used.
For customers using a coal boiler, it may be possible to modify the existing boiler depending on age, design and technology however for those using natural gas or diesel, an upgrade is not possible.
