The Chinese currency is called Renminbi (RMB) or the ‘People’s Money’. The basic unit is the Yuan, which comprises 10 Jiao or 100 Fen. Colloquially, also referred to as Kuai and Mao.
Major foreign banks should be able to exchange foreign currency with a passport, include the Hong Kong and Shang Hai Bank, Citibank and ANZ Bank.
Bank of China, CITIC Bank, Commercial & Industrial Bank and the Construction Bank are the major Chinese Banks providing foreign currency banking services. You can open domestic bank account at any one of them with a passport and a deposit. You may deposit and withdraw Chinese or foreign currency. You also can apply for an ATM cards for a small fee. ATMs can be found throughout the city to access both foreign and local accounts. However, Renminbi is issued by the ATMs.

Numerous ATMs can found throughout the city to access both foreign and local accounts. Renminbi cash is issued by the ATMS.
ATMs with CIRRUS, Most, Plus, Diners Club, Carte Blanc, JCB, Visa and Mastercard links are located throughout the city. However, ATMs at smaller branches of the Bank of China can not always be relied upon to be operating.
The majority of five star hotels around the city also have ATMs.
American Express Emergency Cashing Facility
Home country foreign currency personal checks can be cashed in foreign currency at each of these facilities if accompanied by an American Express Card. Services available at the Bank of China and CITIC Bank.
