Simultaneous interpretation means the interpreters translate almost simultaneously via special equipment without interrupting the speaker's speech to the audience. Being highly efficient, simultaneous interpretation can better ensure the smooth flow of presentations and meetings, removing the danger of losing the essence or track of the subject.
Simultaneous interpreters need to have solid bilingual skills and be able to switch between languages highly swiftly. They need to have a strong short-term memory, be quick in learning and comprehension, possess a high degree of mental calmness and remain alert at the same time . It is generally acknowledged in our profession that it usually takes around three to five years of intensive exercise for a conference interpreter to mature and become a qualified simultaneous interpreter. As this type of interpretation is highly demanding physically and mentally, interpreters usually work in a group of two or three persons, each taking a shift of fifteen or twenty minutes to avoid the fatigue that leads to errors.
